SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival: If you could only listen to three albums for the rest of your life—what would they be?
MK: Robert Palmer – Sneaking Salley Through The Alley; Nina Simone – anything she recorded; AC/DC – Highway To Hell
SSJF: What did 10-year old you want to be when you grew up? Do you remember why?
MK: Piano Player because it’s all I wanted to do and all I did whenever I had free time as a kid. Truck Driver because I was always fascinated by the romanticism of exploring the world and being on your own time.
SSJF: How would you describe ‘high school you’ in three words?
MK: Accepted, music-obsessed, happy.
SSJF: One person you were surprised to find out is a fan?
MK: My dad.
SSJF: What, if anything, is your most treasured possession?
MK: Being able to live in the moment.
SSJF: Why do you live where you do?
MK: Because it’s paradise and inspiring to live on Vancouver Island.
SSJF: What do you think of when you think of Saskatoon?
MK: Great memories of touring Canada for the very first time when I started my career. The SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival booked me in Saskatoon and North Battleford and it was my first time in the prairies, it was a beautiful summer and I’ve loved the prairies ever since.
SSJF: What has been your most memorable or inspirational gig and why?
MK: Being in the studio with Art Neville and Eddie Bo when I recorded my second record. I realized music was about everything besides trying to play the right notes, it’s about life.
SSJF: What has been your strangest celebrity encounter?
MK: Standing in a hotel lobby in Sun Valley admiring a photograph not realizing the short guy next to me was Arnold Schwarzenegger.
SSJF: If you weren’t playing music you would be…
MK: A chef and restaurant owner.
LIVE // Saturday June 30th at 8:50pm at the Broadway Theatre.
