Outreach
Outreach is an important part of the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival Inc.’s mission, vision, and annual programming, which includes fostering, promoting, and presenting jazz music to the people of Saskatchewan. In 2024, the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival offered two Outreach initiatives: the Jazz in Schools Program, in partnership with the University of Saskatchewan, and the Carehome Outreach Program, in partnership with Aspira Retirement Living.
JAZZ IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM
The Jazz in Schools Program provides an educational jazz experience to high school students in Saskatoon, helping to foster and grow jazz music and music education in the province. The Jazz in Schools Program takes place at four Saskatoon high schools: Marion M. Graham Collegiate, Evan Hardy Collegiate, Bishop James Mahoney High School, and Bethlehem Catholic High School. Led by professional bassist and Saskatoon educator Emmett Fortosky, participants of the Jazz in Schools Program take part in a specialized jazz workshop and are encouraged to register for the University of Saskatchewan Jazz Intensive at the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. Jazz in Schools participants also receive a discount for the University of Saskatchewan Jazz Intensive. A special thanks to the University of Saskatchewan for making the Jazz in Schools and Jazz Intensive programs possible this year. Learn more about the University of Saskatchewan Jazz Intensive here.
CAREHOME OUTREACH PROGRAM
The Carehome Outreach Program sponsored by Aspira Retirement Living will offer five performances in 2024 to residents at retirement homes in Saskatoon, including Porteous Lodge, Luther Special Care Home, and Aspira’s Stonebridge Crossing and Hunter Village. All performances are offered in July and feature Saskatchewan artist Sons of Django. The goal of the Carehome Outreach Program is to help make both jazz and music more accessible to everyone, by bringing the show directly to the residents.
A special thanks to Aspira Retirement Living for making this outreach initiative possible this year. A special thanks as well to the New Horizons for Seniors Program for helping to fund the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival’s Carehome Outreach Program!
